Play Dough without Cooking
The following recipe is a big batch recipe. It makes about 3 1/2 pounds of play dough—ten of the five ounce commercial tubs. If you are having a party and want even more play dough, make two batches-- about all that can be made in a stand-type mixer at one time. You can also make this play dough by hand.
If you want multiple colors, divide the dough and knead in the food coloring after the dough is made. If one color is sufficient, add the food coloring with the water and save the step of kneading in the coloring. To keep the food coloring from staining your hands, you may wish to wear gloves for the kneading.
3-4 cups all-purpose or bread flour
1 1/2 cups salt
1 1/2 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
What colors do you want?
Mix three cups of flour together with the salt and cream of tartar in the bowl of your stand-type mixer. Add the oil and water and knead with a dough hook in your electric stand-type mixer for five to six minutes. (If you are kneading by hand, knead for eight to ten minutes.) Add more flour to get a soft, workable dough.
Store the dough in a sealed container to keep it from becoming dry. If it becomes too dry, place it back in the mixer bowl and knead in a dribble of water.
Modelling Clay
1 cup cornstarch
2 cups salt
1-1/3 cups cold water
Put salt and 2/3 cup of cold water in saucepan and boil. Mix cornstarch with remaining water, add boiling mixture. Stir well until mixed. Cool. Then, knead into workable mixture. Make models or decorations. Bake in 225 degree oven, turning at least 3 or 4 times, for 2 hours. Decorate.
Finger Paint
3 tsp. sugar
1/2 cup of cornstarch
2 cups cold water
Mix ingredients in saucepan. Bring to a boil, stiring constantly. Cool. Pour in small jars with food colouring or powdered paint. Finger paint works best on shiny paper, such as shelving paper or waxed paper, or you can paint directly on a tray.
Sparkle Paint
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tbsp sugar
1/2 to 3/4 cup of water
Powder paint
Put ingredients into jar and shake well. Works best if made ahead of time.
